The clothing did not create courage in a magical sense. It created conditions in which courage had fewer obstacles. A jacket settled the shoulders, boots changed the walk, lipstick fixed the face, and a familiar shirt removed one more decision.

Several items carried evidence. They had survived interviews, difficult days, earlier jobs, or the lives of family members. Wearing them placed the present body inside a longer history of capability.

There was also a useful contradiction. Courage sometimes meant becoming visible through color, jewelry, or sharp structure.
